••• GeoPort™ for Power Macintosh Upgrade ReadMe •••
This ReadMe file is for Power Macintosh users who purchased a GeoPort Telecom Adapter for a 660AV or 840AV. The 660AV/840AV GeoPort Telecom Adapter hardware can be used with the Power Macintosh. However the accompanying GeoPort for Power Macintosh 1.0 software must be installed in order to use the GeoPort Telecom Adapter with a Power Macintosh.
• New version of Express Modem
The GeoPort for Power Macintosh 1.0 release includes Express Modem 1.5.1 software. Express Modem 1.5.1 contains some additional features that are not described in the manual that was included with the 660AV/840AV GeoPort Telecom Adapter:
1) The Express Modem control panel has been enhanced. The control panel has an Express Modem Settings menu shown below that allows the user to set options, such as waiting for a dial tone when dialing, that affect all applications that use Express Modem.
2) The Express Modem control panel also includes an Express Modem Status window. The status window indicates when data is transferred to or from the GeoPort Telecom Adapter. When a fax or data connection is active it gives information about the type of connection.
To switch from the Express Modem Settings window to Express Modem Status window click on "Express Modem Settings" and drag to "Express Modem Status" and vice versa.
3) The FaxTerminal now supports Fax Error Correction Mode. This is disabled by default. To enable this feature select the Preferences in the FaxTerminal application and clear the check box labeled "Turn off Error Correction Mode (ECM) Feature" as shown below.
• Compatibility with communication applications
A communication application that requires a modem may use the GeoPort Telecom Adapter as a modem. There are three ways to access the GeoPort Telecom Adapter.
1) If the application supports the Macintosh Communications Toolbox just select the Express Modem Tool as the communications tool.
2) If the application does not support the Macintosh Communications Toolbox it may still be aware of the GeoPort Telecom Adapter and will offer it as an alternative to the Modem Port or Printer Port. For example Apple Remote Access offers a dedicated GeoPort selection, as pictured below.
To use ARA with the GeoPort Telecom Adapter, select Express Modem ARA 2.0 under the Modem pop-up menu, click the Port pop-up menu and select the GeoPort icon.
3) If the application does not support the Macintosh Communications Toolbox and does not let you select the GeoPort as an alternative to the Modem Port you may still use the application with a GeoPort Telecom Adapter by redirecting the modem port to the GeoPort Telecom Adapter. To do this open the Express Modem control panel and select the Express Modem Settings window. This window has a section labeled Modem Serial Port Setting which contains buttons for selecting Express Modem or an External modem for the Modem Port. Select "Use Express Modem", then whenever the application accesses the modem port it will actually be accessing the GeoPort Telecom Adapter. If you later want to use some other serial device on your modem port you will need to reselect "Use External Modem".
